Born in Joze, Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, viscount de Turenne and duke of Bouillon, served under King henry IV and was one of the leaders of the Protestant party. He was the father of Marshal turenne and Frédéric Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne, duke de Bouillon (1604-52), who was constantly conspiring during the ministry of Cardinal richelieu (allied with the Spanish, he defeated the French at Marfée) and during the fronde.
